Project composed by Francesco Caligiuri (soprano, baritone, bass clarinet, flute, synth)Olimpo is a delicate, introspective, yet adventurous, solo work. The entire album is an individual effort, from composition to execution, with Caligiuri dedicated to the construction of layers of sound, with soft use of electronics serving the reeds, from bass clarinet to soprano sax to baritone, with clear inspiration from the best John Surman. The work communicates a unique vision along the emotional landscapes of the classical Myth, inspired by popular music, but remaining firmly tied to the jazz tradition. The result is ethereal but bold, yet extremely enjoyable. The improvisational path of this music can be summarized in the word “Mýthos”, “story”. The different timbres of the instruments and the fascinating sounds of suggestive electronics, leading the mind into an imaginary and imaginative journey between myth and legend, along the cultural topoi of ancient Greece and the entire Mediterranean basin. Improvisation, which exposes the musician by expressing his identity and essence, inspires the intense musical thought of the project. The nine original compositions all recall personalities and divinity stories of Greek mythology: from Zeus and Poseidon, powerful and stable, to Dionisio, Apollo and Aphrodite, sentimental and harmonious; from Ares, Athena and Efesto, creative and solemn, to Hades, dark and unstable.

Olimpo is the debut album of Francesco Caligiuri, a delicate, introspective, yet adventurous, solo work. It communicates a unique vision along the emotional landscapes of the classic Myth, with strong inspirations from popular music, but firmly linked to the jazz tradition. The result is both ethereal and bold, and extremely enjoyable.

This is Francesco Caligiuri first cd and he strikes! What an open and wild mind behind this beautiful music. I specially love his blend of strong Mediterranean melodies with the powerful Viking spirit” (Michel Godard)
